The proposal was developed after extensive urban and architectural analysis of the area, both from desktop research of its history but also through the teams unique perspective after numerous site visits to Kastraki. The proposal is developed base on the triptych "HISTORY – ART – LEISURE", which was also outlined in the competitions brief. Emphasis is also placed on the concepts of memory and history, exploring the different time periods that have significantly shaped the current image of the area —from antiquity to its more recent industrial history and its role as a refuge for displaced populations after 1922. Evidence of these historical phases can still be found spatially within Kastraki and in its surrounding area and are treated as ‘relics’ within the site. The project is organized in 5 distinctive zones- 5 landscapes:
a. Landscape of History
b. Landscape of the Past
c. Garden of Memories
d. Urban Forest
e. Art Walk
These five thematic areas aim to provoke engagement and activate visitors five senses creating a unique and immersive experience.
